Description: Frederick Stengel may have entered the brewing business as early as 1852. Over the following years Stengel is listed as operating a white beer brewery, saloon, billiard saloon & restaurant. It seems that Stengel primarily produced Weiss Beer but also branched out into Lager brewing as well (see “Lager Bier” bottle example below).
This is the oldest variation of Stengel bottle shown. It is a brown stoneware bottle de-embossed “F. STENGEL 75 NORFOLK ST N.Y.” the address listed is for the location of the brewery from years: 1864 to 1874 Stengel stoneware bottle w/ the more recent Ludlow St. address. Likely produced during the mid to late 1870’sAqua Weiss Beer style bottle embossed “FRED STENGEL, 48 & 50 LUDLOW ST. NY WEISS BEER” the address used indicates the last location the brewery occupied from 1875 to 1881 Aqua champagne style blob top bottle embossed “FRED STENGEL, 48 & 50 LUDLOW ST. NY LAGER BIER” the address used indicates the last location the brewery occupied from 1875 to 1881. This is an uncommonly seen variation since Stengel mostly produced Weiss beer
