In 1870, George purchased & re-named his Father’s brewing business. By the turn of the century the Bechtel brewery would become the largest on Staten Island, at it’s peak producing up to 150,000 barrels of beer a year. George passed away at the age of 48 and in 1907 the brewery closed for good.

The commonly found George Bechtel bottle has a very large embossing of a soldier or knight holding up an “excelsior” flag.
