H. Derenthal

Business Type: Brewery (NY 77 a)

Years of Operation: 1881 to 1889

Location: 217 & 219 21st St. Brooklyn

Description: Henry Derenthal began brewing in 1871 at 30 Webster Place in the South Slope/Park Slope neighborhood in Brooklyn. In 1881 records show that Derenthal moved to 217 21st St. where he continued to operate a brewery. Derenthal primarily (and perhaps exclusively) brewed Weiss beer. In 1890 Henry Derenthal and business partner Frederick Schalk started a new brewery at the same address (217 & 219 21st st.) they renamed the business “Derenthal & Schalk” to reflect the new partnership and it would appear that they continued producing Weiss beer.
