R & W Bender

Business Type: Brewery (NY 355)

Years of Operation: 1874 to 1884

Location: 169 Spring Street, Manhattan

Description: Robert & William Bender opened a brewery in Lower Manhattan in 1874. Although not much could be found on the Bender brewery it is likely that they produced Weiss Beer based upon the style of the stoneware bottles found, this particular area of the city was a popular location for Weiss Beer brewers during the 1870’s & 1880’s. Many breweries that soley produced Weiss Beer went out of business by the turn of century due to the overwhelming popularity of Lager Beer by that point in time. The location of the R & W Bender Brewery is now referred to as SOHO and the building is long gone having been demolished and replaced by an apartment building in 1910.
